'A Night to Remember' is an evening gala to honor members of our community who have significantly contributed to the vision of Celebrate St James, which is to preserve St. James’ rich history and inspire an appreciation and knowledge of the arts in our community.

​Our mission is to revitalize St. James as the flourishing hamlet it once was by bringing the cultural arts to our community to drive economic growth.

We’re excited to invite you to 'A Night To Remember', the inaugural Celebrate St James Gala. We will be honoring members of our community who have significantly contributed to the mission of Celebrate St. James, which is to preserve and celebrate St. James’ rich history and inspire an appreciation and knowledge of the arts in our community.

Our community once thrived in the early 1900’s.  The Long Island Railroad brought actors, singers, dancers, writers and politicians to our doors and they chose to call our hamlet home.  This was especially true in New York City during summer months, when the theatres were dark, the city was hot, and everyone longed for the country!  They visited at the St. James General Store and gathered at Deepwells Mansion, the summer home of New York City’s Mayor William Gaynor and his family.  The town was alive!

Now picture Lake Avenue adorned with benches and planters, lovely shops and galleries, a charming ice cream parlor, and a park where history can unfold and tempt you to step back into the past and explore the wonders of St. James. Today, we have begun this transformation! A newly adopted town ordinance has designated Lake Avenue as an Historic and Cultural Arts District, thanks to Supervisor Wehrheim and his great team of town officials.  We have been given the opportunity to expand Burke Veterans Memorial Park to include a clock tower kiosk, in which our history will be told, as well as additional benches and tables for chess or checkers.  The land on which all this will occur has been generously donated to St. James by the Town of Smithtown, but the funding to build this pavilion is OUR responsibility!

Together, we will make this vision a reality. We will transform Lake Avenue into a flourishing gathering place where shops and eateries abound and where our rich history in the arts is celebrated.  We will attract visitors and they will boost the economy of our town – but more importantly, we will provide a nourishing and inspiring climate for our children and their children, where community pride brings people together in a wholesome and enriching environment – a place we are proud to call home.
